About DBT

What is DBT?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy is a structured, skills-based treatment intended for clients who struggle with emotional regulation. This type of therapy tends to be a good fit for people with BPD, self-harm tendencies, or suicidal thoughts. There are four main skills categories that we will cover: mindfulness skills, distress tolerance skills, emotional regulation skills, and interpersonal effectiveness skills.

  • Mindfulness skills – practices that will help you feel more aware and in control of your mental activity

  • Distress tolerance skills – tools for managing overwhelming emotions and impulses in the moment, such as coping skills and crisis management skills

  • Emotional regulation skills – tools for dealing with those emotions in the long-term – processing through and managing difficult emotions, and decreasing the frequency and intensity of these emotions

  • Interpersonal effectiveness skills – tools for keeping relationships steady while also asserting your boundaries and maintaining your values
